A message from Joseph L. Bast
President, The Heartland Institute

Dear Friends:

I am delighted to invite you to join fellow Heartland members, donors, advisors, and friends as The Heartland Institute celebrates its 19th year defending individual liberty and limited government.

The price of liberty, in the words of John Philpot Curran, a contemporary of Thomas Jefferson, is eternal vigilance. As mortal individuals, we cannot hope to pay such a price. In fact, we can hardly justify investing time and money to defend something that benefits everyone, even those who actively work to undermine it. It requires extraordinary commitment to keep fighting year after year in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds.

Institutions such as The Heartland Institute are part of the answer. No single individual working alone can do as much to defend freedom as many of us working together. Cooperation allows specialization, which boosts productivity. An organization can marshal greater resources, attract more attention, be more steadfast, and outlive the individuals who create it.

Once a year we gather to meet others who share our passion for liberty, to celebrate our successes and rededicate ourselves to our mission. Heartland's Anniversary Benefits are big, fun, and memorable: You will leave impressed and uplifted by the success of our combined efforts on behalf of liberty.

Please make plans now to join us on October 16.
