Between 1970 and 2002 government expenditures on health care rose by 690 percent, and if current trends hold, by the year 2050 those expenditures will account for one-third of U.S. gross domestic product.

A key driver of expenditures is Medicaid, the socialized health care system for low-income Americans administered by the states under mandate by the national government. Medicaid is now the number-one budget expenditure in every state.

The reasons behind unsustainable growth in Medicaid expenditures, and some innovative solutions for states to implement as remedy, are discussed in the enclosed Research & Commentary package, new from The Heartland Institute.
