McAllen,Tex. has become the poster child for wasteful Medicare spending. Per-capita outlays for Medicare recipients is twice the national average and far above the medical care expenses incurred by the average McAllen patient.

After The New Yorker magazine profiled the town in depth and determined the fault lay with doctors and hospitals, Kaiser Health News asked health experts to analyze the magazine’s analysis. Greg Scandlen, director of Consumers for Health Care Choices, was among those providing insight.
