Moultonborough, New Hampshire, the town with the most lakefront land in the state, has decided to employ aquatic herbicides to combat an invasion of noxious milfoil. The tourist town is battling a milfoil outbreak that is choking Lake Winnipesaukee. The outbreak threatens the 80-to-90 percent of the town’s business that relies on its water resources.
The town council voted unanimously to approve aquatic herbicide application, which is frequently opposed by environmental activists but has an outstanding record of removing invasive milfoil in an effective and environmentally benign manner.
