The science and the soil, joined at the hip

James M. Taylor - Sep 08, 2010

Los Angeles is naming an environmental high school high school after Al Gore. Fittingly, the high school is being built on contaminated soil.

The Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences, named after Gore and Rachel Carson, is due to open on September 13. Rachel Carson’s 1962 book Silent Spring defined emotional exaggeration in the name of science before passing the torch to Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. Carson’s book led to the needless banning of the phenomenally successful insecticide DDT. DDT had virtually eradicated malaria in most of the world, but malaria has come back with a vengeance and killed untold millions of people since Silent Spring induced a near global ban of the insecticide. Carson’s Silent Spring claims, much like Gore’s An Inconvenient ... (read more)

Well Said!

Kerry Emanuel"No climate scientist denies that the present state of the science entails large uncertainties in climate projections, with possible outcomes ranging from benign to catastrophic. While science works to reduce these uncertainties, citizens must decide whether and how much resource should be devoted to mitigating the uncertainly estimated risk."

“By exaggerating the certainties, papering over the gaps, demonizing the skeptics and peddling tales of imminent catastrophe, they’ve discredited the entire climate-change movement. The political damage will be severe. As Mr. Mead succinctly puts it: ‘Skeptics up, Obama down, cap-and-trade dead.’ That also goes for Canada, whose climate policies are inevitably tied to those of the United States.”

"We are witnessing the Berlin Wall moment in the global warming regime. The statist cabal that has ruled the climate debate since the UN IPCC's inception in 1988 is now tumbling down before our eyes. The so-called 'gold-standard' of scientific review turns out to be counterfeit. Global warming is now undergoing the fastest ever collapse of any modern political movement.”

Alan Carlin“The business of science is being skeptical, and if you’re not skeptical, you’re probably not doing science.”

Roy W. Spencer"For those scientists who value their scientific reputations, I would advise that they distance themselves from politically motivated claims of a 'scientific consensus' on the causes of global warming -- before it is too late. Don’t let five Norwegians on the Nobel Prize committee be the arbiters of what is good science." (read more)

William Happer"Every time you exhale, you exhale air that has 4 percent carbon dioxide. To say that that's a pollutant just boggles my mind. What used to be science has turned into a cult. . . . All the evidence I see is that the current warming of the climate is just like past warmings."
