Dick Armey will keynote the CHCC's Third Annual Awards BanquetDick Armey, former Majority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, will explain "How to Survive the New Administration (and Congress, and State Legislatures, and Governors)" when Consumers for Health Care Choices holds its third annual Awards Banquet in Washington, DC on Wednesday, November 12.

The Texas Republican wrote the Contract with America in 1994, setting the stage for one of the most productive and pro-freedom sessions in the history of the U.S. House. Since 2003, Mr. Armey has served as chairman of Freedom Works, a think tank dedicated to fighting for lower taxes, less government, and more economic freedom.

He's been called an idea machine and one-man think tank and is one of the most dynamic and inspiring speakers ever to lead a majority party in the national's capital.

With the nation facing new challenges under a new president, Mr. Armey's insights will prove particularly valuable.

Wednesday, November 12 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC is the date and place for the Third Annual Members Meeting and Awards Banquet, where we will recognize the special contributions of some of our pioneering colleagues, including awards in public policy, health economics, and medical practice.

Dick Armey, former House Majority leader and now chairman of Freedom Works, will keynote the event. Whichever way the presidential election will have been decided, the next couple of years will be daunting for all who believe in freedom and personal empowerment in health care.

The day begins at 11:00 a.m. with our Members Meeting, during which we'll discuss the progress and challenges facing CHCC and The Heartland Institute and the future of health care.

From 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. we will have an in-depth examination of the election results and their implications for consumer-driven health care, with some of the most active and influential leaders in this field.

At 6:30 pm we will move into our Third Annual Awards Banquet, keynoted by Dick Armey. We also will recognize the special contributions of some of our pioneering colleagues, including awards in public policy (Roy Ramthun), health economics (Linda Gorman), and medical practice (Jordan Shlain). These elegant dinners have become milestones in the evolution of consumer-driven health care ... you won't want to miss this one!

Political Wrap-Up (What Happened Out There?)

Brian Costin

Brian Costin is assistant director of government relations for The Heartland Institute. He recruits, hires, trains, and manages legislative specialists and works to encourage legislators to embrace free-market approaches to public policy issues. Costin holds a Master of Management of Nonprofit Administration degree from North Park University. He graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and politics/government. Previously, Costin worked in operations management and business development at United Parcel Service.

Merrill Matthews, Ph.D.

Merrill Matthews, Ph.D., is director of the Council for Affordable Health Insurance in Alexandria, Virginia and a resident scholar with the Institute for Policy Innovation. He is a public policy analyst specializing in health care issues and the author of numerous studies in health policy and other public policy issues. He is past president of the Health Economics Roundtable for the National Association for Business Economics, the nation’s largest trade association of business economists. Matthews served for 10 years as the medical ethicist for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center’s Institutional Review Board for Human Experimentation, and he has contributed chapters to several books. He also serves on the Texas Advisory Committee of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. Matthews received his Ph.D. in humanities from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Joel C. White

Joel White is president of J.C. White Consulting, which provides clients with strategic, political, and policy advice to help navigate the Congressional and regulatory processes. His focus is primarily on health and tax issues. White is executive director of the Health IT Now Coalition, a diverse group of organizations representing patients, health providers, health insurers, agents, and brokers, employers and unions, and the Coalition for Affordable Health Coverage, a broad-based coalition that came together to increase access to affordable health insurance for those with and without coverage. He is also a visiting senior fellow at the Galen Institute. He spent 12 years on Capitol Hill as professional staff, most recently as staff director of the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee.

David McKalip, M.D.

Dr. David McKalip is a private practice neurological surgeon in St. Petersburg, Florida. He is president of the Florida Neurosurgical Society, president-elect of the Pinellas County Medical Association. He is a member of the board of directors of the Florida Medical Association, chair of its Council on Medical Economics, and a member of its political action committee board, He represents the Florida Medical Association to the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates. He also serves as chairman of the Florida Taxpayers Union and has been instrumental in working to place a Proposition 13-style constitutional tax cap amendment on the ballot.

Brian McManus
Brian McManus is vice president of government relations with Medical Savings Insurance Company, a company he joined in October 2005 and a provider of Health Savings Accounts. He supervises and operates the company's political business in Washington, DC, which includes developing health care solutions, creating marketing pieces to support those solutions, marketing those health care solutions to members of Congress, organizing and participating in coalitions and trade associations, and communicating with the media. Prior to joining Medical Savings Insurance Company, McManus was with Golden Rule Insurance Company for 15 years, beginning in May 1990. He is a founding member and facilitator of the Health Care Freedom Coalition; a volunteer assistant coach with two travel soccer teams; and a volunteer with DC Parents for School Choice.
Michael D. Ostrolenk

Michael D. Ostrolenk received his undergraduate degree in government from West Virginia Wesleyan College. His masters degree is in counseling psychology from John F. Kennedy University. He completed post-graduate training in health and somatic psychology. Ostrolenk is certified in spiral dynamics and wade mindsets, and he is a licensed psychotherapist (CA). Ostrolenk is director of government affairs for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. He also is the founder and national coordinator for the Medical Privacy Coalition (2001-present) and the co-founder and national director of the Liberty Coalition, a transpartisan coalition of groups working to protect civil liberties, privacy, and human autonomy (2005-present). He is the senior political analyst for Global Health Media (2006-present) and sits on the steering committee for Openthegovernment.org

Deborah C. Peel, M.D.

Dr. Deborah C. Peel is a practicing physician and national expert on medical privacy. She became active in privacy rights at the federal level in 1993 when the Clinton health care initiative required every doctor-patient encounter to be entered in a federal health database. She advocated first as an individual and later on behalf of state and national medical specialty organizations for patient control of access to medical records. She is also co-chair of the Committee on Government Relations and Insurance of the American Psychoanalytic Association. In 2004, Dr. Peel founded Patient Privacy Rights to educate and empower Americans to preserve and protect their fundamental human and civil rights to medical privacy, and in 2006, she formed the Coalition for Patient Privacy, a bipartisan coalition of 40+ organizations.

Dan Perrin

Dan Perrin served for more than seven years on the staff of the U.S. Committee on Foreign Relations and has also served on the staff of the U.S. Senate Steering Committee. He was a founder of the HSA Coalition in 1991, when it was known as the Business Coalition for Affordable Health Care. He has appeared on C-SPAN, CNN, CNBC and other national television networks and has conducted more than 300 radio interviews, but he most enjoys debates or call-in shows. He was founder and editor-in-chief of the Web site HSA Insider and sole contributor to its content until it was sold. He is also the author of HSA Road Rules, considered by bankers and insurers to be the “bible” of the HSA industry. More than 65,000 copies of which have been downloaded.
