Please join The Heartland Institute and the FreedomWorks Foundation in welcoming John A. Allison, chairman of BB&T, to Chicago. The event will begin at 4:30 pm at The Chicago Club, located at 81 East Van Buren Street.
Mr. Allison, who is the longest-serving CEO of a top-25 financial services company, will lead a discussion regarding the root causes of and potential cures for the financial crisis that continues to grip the world economy.
Mr. Allison began his service with BB&T in 1971, became president in 1987, and was elected chairman and CEO in July of 1989. During Mr. Allison’s tenure as CEO from 1989 to 2008, BB&T grew from $4.5 billion to $137 billion in assets. A man of principle, Mr. Allison responded to the Supreme Court’s infamous Kelo v. City of New London, Connecticut decision by announcing that BB&T would not lend money to developers whose planned commercial projects involved the use of eminent domain to take land from private citizens. Mr. Allison is also known for making Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged a book he describes as “the best defense of capitalism ever written” required reading for all of his management staff.
Space is limited. Please RSVP to Gwendalyn Carver at 312/377-4000 or via email at gcarver@heartland.org.
