Michigan’s Medicaid program has one of the most restrictive drug formularies in the U.S. One consequence is the routine substitution of generic drugs for the brand-name drugs prescribed by doctors, which sometimes has harmful effects on patients. The Michigan Osteopathic Association and Michigan Association of Family Physicians say the preference by many health plans toward generic drugs leaves too many patients and their doctors out of the decision-making about which drug they can prescribe or use.
