The August issue of Environment & Climate News reports on a Congressional Budget Office study that pegs the cost of the Waxman-Markey cap-and-tax bill at nearly $850 billion over the next decade.

Also in this issue:

* Meteorologist Anthony Watts finds 89 percent of official U.S. temperature measurement stations are corrupted by poor site selection that gives false warming signals.

* Great Lakes water levels are on the rise, putting the damper on media reports claiming global warming has been causing declining water levels.

* The governments of Chicago and Connecticut have banned bisphenol-A, a chemical that strengthens plastics, from food and beverage containers intended for use by children under three years old. The chemical affects lab rats fed extremely high doses but has no record of causing any human health effects.

* Scientists, economists, and policymakers alike cheered Climate Change Reconsidered, the 2009 report of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change, at its introduction on June 2.
