Budget and Tax

  • The October and December issues of Budget & Tax News highlighted the federal government’s recent “buyouts, bailouts, loans, takeovers, and giveaways.”
  • The Government Relations team distributed Research & Commentaries on pension systems, TABOR, and film tax subsidies. Their letters to the editor and opeds were published in newspapers in California, Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma.


Smoking Bans and Taxes

Legislative Specialist John Nothdurft distributed Research & Commentaries addressing smoking bans in Michigan and New Jersey and cigarette tax proposals in Kansas. He was published in USA Today and newspapers in New Jersey and Oregon.


Finance and Insurance

Legislative Specialist Matthew Glans distributed Research & Commentaries on the Community Reinvestment Act, student loans, unemployment insurance, bank closures, and worker’s compensation. He was published in newspapers in Alabama, California, Illinois, Missouri, and Washington.


Health Care

  • The November and December issues of Health Care News reported, among other things, a decline in the number of uninsured in the U.S. and passage of a mental health parity measure.
  • Consumers for Health Care Choices hosted a successful workshop and awards dinner on November 12.
  • Heartland representatives were published in Endocrine Today and Investor’s Business Daily and quoted in the Niles (Michigan) Daily Star.
  • Bart Madden, author of More Choices, Better Health, toured Europe for three weeks promoting his ideas for improving patients’ access to experimental drugs.


InfoTech & Telecom

  • October, November, and December issues of InfoTech & Telecom News highlighted a wide range of topics, from computer security to privacy to Google-Yahoo.
  • IT&T News Managing Editor Jim Lakely was published in The Hill, a must-read newsletter in Washington, DC, and The Baltimore Sun.


Education

  • October, November, and December issues of School Reform News addressed teacher merit pay, charter schools, cash-for-grades, and more.
  • Heartland representatives were published in newspapers in Alabama, Florida, Maryland, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.


Environment

  • October and November issues of Environment & Climate News were released, addressing global warming, nuclear power, wind power, and more.
  • Legislative Specialist Zonia Pino and Senior Fellow Maureen Martin attended a convention of high school science teachers in Iowa. More than 200 parents received copies of our “Climate Change in the Classroom: Education or Indoctrination?” package.
  • Senior Fellow Sandy Liddy Bourne helped solicit and submit comments on EPA’s Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on the regulation of greenhouse gases.
  • Heartland Senior Fellow James M. Taylor and Unstoppable Global Warming author S. Fred Singer won debates with global warming alarmists. Science Director Jay Lehr addressed audiences in Arizona and Washington.


Urban Affairs

Heartland Senior Fellow Lee Walker participated in Chicago’s “Principal for a Day” program, spoke at the two-day Economic Empowerment Summit 2008 and at a forum hosted by Olive-Harvey College, and attended an honors and awards banquet to benefit Excellent Way Shelter.


New Media

Heartland’s reinvigorated blog, www.fromtheheartland.org, is attracting hundreds of new visitors a day with its sometimes edgy, sometimes irreverent, always provocative content.
