Donald Kendal (2014)
Donald Kendal served as an intern in Heartland’s Communications Department. Kendal graduated from Benedictine University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications, and was a staff writer for the university’s newspaper.
John Engle (2014)
John Engle moved on from his internship in the Communications Department to earn his M.B.A. at the University of Oxford in England. He went on to positions as a policy analyst for the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, vice president for strategic implementation at IOnTheScene, strategy analyst for IntraLink Global, and president of Almington Capital, Inc.
Benjamin Capobianco (2014)
Benjamin Capobianco joined the Communications Department as an intern between terms as a student at Wheaton College. He went on to internships at Boyd Watterson Asset Management in Chicago and Prada in New York City. He is now communications manager for Kiesque, an Illinois-based cosmetics company.
Rafael Mangual (2013)
Mangual was a law student at DePaul University when he earned his internship in the Communications Department of The Heartland Institute. Now an attorney, Mangual is currently the Policy Manager for Legal Policy at The Manhattan Institute, a free-market think tank in New York.
Alexandra Shanahan (2013)
Alexandra Shanahan began her internship in the Communications Department a year after an internship at the law school of her alma mater, Northwestern University. She is now a digital media professional, serving as an account manager at 3Q Digital, a marketing firm based in Chicago.
Brittany Sommer (2013)
Brittany Sommer began her internship in the Communications Department shortly after graduation from DePaul University. She now works at the Chicago-based hedge fund Anchor Bolt Capital, LP.
Mary Parrilli (2013)
Mary Parrilli started her internship in the Communications Department after studying psychology and philosophy at Montana State University-Bozeman and the University of Illinois at Chicago. She moved on to manage an arts program in New Mexico, and now owns her own natural cleaning business in suburban Chicago.
Alexander Klemp (2013)
Alexander Klemp served as an intern in the Communications Department while a graduate student at Pepperdine University. He has since gone on to earn his masters in Public Policy at Pepperdine and is now self-employed while studying geographic information systems at Claremont Graduate University.
Sarah Husain (2013)
Sarah Husain worked as an intern in the Communications Department while between terms as political science and French student at Emory University in Atlanta. She went on to graduate in 2016, complete internships for two civil rights organizations, and is now an development associate at FiscalNote, a digital government information firm based in Washington, DC.
Notable Past Development Interns
George Kemper (2016)
George Kemper attended Loyola Academy College Preparatory & Presbyterian College. He has been with Heartland since March as a development intern. He is developing administrative skills, and learning daily how to research new, current, and potential donors (corporation, individual, foundation). After his internship at Heartland he plans to enlist into the Army.
Brittney Jones (2014 -2015)
Brittney Jones served as an intern in Heartland’s Development Department. Brittney attended American Intercontinental University. She is a quick learner, trainable, detailed oriented, and has a friendly personality. After completing 20 weeks as a development intern Heartland hired her as our full time development assistant.
Richard Suel (2014)
Richard Suel served as an intern in the Heartland’s Development Department. Richard graduated from University of Minnesota - Twin Cities in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Global Studies-International Political Economy. After his internship he participated in the Public Policy and International Affairs program at Michigan of University. He currently works at the Advocates for Human Rights as a development assistant.
Joan Ogwumike (2013)
Joan Ogwunki is currently a development coordinator at Mikva challenge with a Journalism background, and experiences in development and grant administration. Joan researches prospective donors and assists Mikva’s development team in all aspects of funding research and donor relations. Joan holds a Bachelor’s in Mass Communication – Journalism, with a minor in Political Science from Purdue University, and a Master’s in Public Administration from University of Illinois at Springfield.
Notable Past Government Relations Interns
Logan Elizabeth Pike (2013)
Logan Pike worked as in intern in Heartland’s government relations department in 2013 and was immediately retained as full-time staff in the department. Pike has bachelor’s degrees in both Political Science and International Affairs from Florida State University. Prior to coming to Heartland, she was a research intern at The James Madison Institute, a free-market think tank in Tallahassee, Florida. She is currently a state government relations manager for the Government Relations Department at The Heartland Institute. Logan is the co-author of The Heartland Institute’s 2015 Welfare Reform Report Card, an important piece of scholarship that garnered wide national attention and continues to influence the policy proposals of state legislators around the country. Her work has appeared in several publications, including Fox News Opinion, The Washington Times, The Daily Caller, National Review, Brietbart, Townhall Magazine.
Elizabeth Henderson (2011)
Elizabeth Henderson earned an internship with Heartland’s government relations department in 2015. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Northwestern University and a law degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She is currently an attorney at Mercer Thompson LLC in Atlanta.
Taylor Smith (2012)
Taylor Smith joined Heartland’s government relations internship program in 2012, shortly after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Smith stayed on with Heartland’s GR department, working as a policy analyst on environment and energy policy until 2015. He is now the government and public affairs coordinator at Enbridge, Inc., an energy company based in Canada and with offices in the Chicago area.
Kellie Slappey Nothstine (2013)
Kellie Slappey Nothstine worked as an intern in Heartland’s government relations department in 2013 and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Alabama Birmingham. She later earned a master’s degree from Loyola University in Chicago, and a law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. She is currently a Title IX coordinator at Campbell University in North Carolina.
Dane Skorup (2013)
Dane Skorup joined Heartland’s internship program in the government relations department in 2013, a year before graduating from Hillsdale College. Skorup went on to intern for the Mackinac Center, a free-market think tank in Michigan, and is currently a grammar school teacher at Founders Classical Academy (Leander) in Austin, Texas.
Hailey Vrdolyak (2015)
Hailey Vrdolyak interned in Heartland’s government relations department in 2015. She is currently attending the University of Notre Dame.
Katie Clancy (2015)
Katie Clancy interned in Heartland’s government relations department in 2015. She is currently attending Butler University and is an intern for the Chicago Republican Party.
Notable Past Marketing Interns
Kelsey Louro (2015)
Kelsey Louro joined Heartland as a volunteer out of the hospitality department at Harper College in Arlington Heights. After assisting with our Grand Opening picnic in August 2015, she continued to volunteer for events in the Andrew Breitbart Freedom Center before entering the internship program in the Marketing Department. She assists with events, data entry, shipping, and organizing the library, and more.
Jhane King (2016)
Jhane King currently interns in Heartland’s marketing department as a graphic design intern, assisting Senior Graphic Designer Kevin Leonard. She is currently attending St. Francis University in Joliet, Illinois with plans to graduate in 2017 with a degree in graphic design.
Arianna Wilkerson (2016)
Arianna Wilkerson began as an intern in the publications department in April 2016 where she showed an ability to write well and improve the writing of others. She then shifted over to the Marketing Department’s internship roster, and three months later was hired full-time in the department as project coordinator.
