Assessing Warren's Generic Drug Plan (Guest: Michael Brzica)

January 16, 2019

The Heartland Institute's health care policy advisor Sarah Lee interviews Michael Brzica on Senator Elizabeth Warren's plan to "nationalize" the development and sale of generic medicines

Senator Elizabeth Warren promoted an idea recently in a Washington Post op-ed that called for the creation of a federal department that would oversee the development and sale of generic medicines to offset what Warren believes are market problems with generics. Brzica, who watches the market closely and has seen some encouraging trends thanks to the Trump administration's moves to approve record numbers of generics (but also some discouraging trends he thinks can be addressed by freeing the marketplace and addressing patent monopolies), marvels at Warren's idea that more government intrusion in the marketplace would continue the trend of higher availability and lower cost generic drugs.
