Ben Boychuk: Independence Day

July 4, 2017

Heartland Institute Director of Communications Jim Lakely and his friend Ben Boychuk, managing editor of the online magazine American Greatness (amgreatness.com), discuss American exceptionalism and the Founding Generation to celebrate Independence Day.

The two patriots, who used to work together at a newspaper in Southern California, talk about how every Independence Day barbeque should include discussions about liberty – and even the reading of patriotic texts, such as the Declaration of Independence. They discuss the risks the Founding Generation took for liberty; why the Declaration was necessary in 1776; the philosophy of John Locke, which inspired Jefferson, Washington, Adams, Franklin, and other Declaration signatories; the state of liberty in modern America; and book recommendations to better appreciate the unique American experiment.
