Dr. Paul Teirstein: Maintenance of Certification Bleeds Doctors Dry

Twelve states are considering bills to protect physicians from cumbersome board recertification requirements jeopardizing patient care, according to Dr. Paul Teirstein, president at National Board of Physicians and Surgeons.

Physicians across the country are speaking out against oppressive maintenance of certification (MOC) requirements by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Expensive texts and time-consuming preparation diverts doctors' attention from patients, yet the tests have no proven positive effect on patient care.

Lawmakers should pass legislation protecting doctors' licenses, hospital admitting privileges, and participation in insurer networks from hinging on MOC, according to Dr. Paul Teirstein, president at National Board of Physicians and Surgeons, in this episode of the Health Care News Podcast, hosted by Health Care News Managing Editor Michael T.
