Eric Bott, Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin: Save Our Beer!

July 25, 2017

Wisconsin lawmakers are under pressure to help big businesses crush small beer distributors, and Americans for Prosperity state director Eric Bott is leading the fight to protect consumers’ rights.

In this episode of the weekly Budget & Tax News podcast, Heartland Institute research fellow and managing editor Jesse Hathaway talks with Eric Bott, the director of the Wisconsin chapter of Americans for Prosperity, about the conservative organization’s efforts to fight for consumers and free markets in the Badger State.

Special-interest groups representing big businesses are trying to goad lawmakers into creating a new government agency, the Office of Alcohol Beverages Enforcement, to duplicate existing agencies’ efforts and regulate small businesses such as liquor distilleries and microbreweries out of the market.

Bott talks about the current status of the fight against the backdoor negotiations to create the Office of Alcohol Beverages Enforcement, telling Hathaway that such an agency would have nearly unlimited regulatory powers over the state’s vibrant beer and liquor industry.

Instead of using government to favor one group of businesses over another group, Bott says government should only regulate businesses when absolutely necessary to protect consumers’ health and safety. Lawmakers should reject industry representatives’ calls for more government and more government regulations, generally allowing consumers to enjoy a cold one from a big beer distributor or a small local brewery as they wish
