How Parents Are Regaining Their Children's Educational Independence

July 12, 2017

Tim Benson and Lennie Jarratt, project manager for Heartland's Center for Education Transformation, discuss how parents are saying "no" to government usurping the role of parents by declaring educational independence.

Tim Benson, a policy analyst at The Heartland Institute, and Lennie Jarratt, project manager for Heartland's Center for Education Transformation, talk about the ways in which families are declaring their children's educational independence. Dozens of states have deliberated on new school choice legislation this session alone, and in many states education savings accounts, vouchers, and pro-liberty programs have been implemented and/or expanded. Jarratt, a homeschooling parent himself, also discusses how homeschooling parents make the ultimate declaration of educational independence by choosing to forego government involvement completely. Jarratt also offers advice for parents who want to homeschool but don't know how to get started.
