Illinois’ New Epi-pen Law: Much Ado About Nothing? Hospitals Offering Free Genetic Tests – Should You Be Concerned? (Guest: Dr. Roger Klein)

August 26, 2019

Dr. Klein joins the podcast to discuss two issues. One involving a state’s attempt to mandate insurance coverage for Epi-pens. The other is hospitals offering free genetic testing for patients in exchange for giving data to drug companies.

When Dr. Roger Klein saw media coverage on Illinois’ new law demanding insurance companies cover Epi-pens for kids, he was confused.  Why would insurance companies not cover devices that could be lifesaving in the event of a severe allergic reaction?  After reading the law, he discovered the law may have more to do with public relations than substance.

Klein also discusses a growing practice in hospitals offering patients free genetic testing in exchange for genetic data.  Costs are covered by drug companies, but the deals raise questions over privacy and propriety.
