John Nothdurft and Donny Kendal present episode #106 of the In The Tank Podcast. This weekly podcast features (as always) interviews, debates, and roundtable discussions that explore the work of think tanks across the country. The show is available for download as part of the Heartland Daily Podcast every Friday. Today’s podcast features work from the Heartland Institute, the Pioneer Institute and the Empire Center.

Better Know a Think Tank

A few weeks ago during this segment, John and Donny spoke with the former president of The Heartland Institute Joe Bast; this week, they are joined by the new president of the Heartland Institute, Dr. Tim Huelskamp. Tim talks about his history as a legislator at the state and federal level and why he choose to take the reigns of The Heartland Institute.

Policybot Featured Work of the Week

This week's Policybot featured work of the week comes from the Empire Center out of New York. Their "2017 What They Make" report is an annual analysis of local government pay. Some of these numbers are shocking. More importantly is the fact that this shocking numbers are not confined to New York.

Donny and John also highlight an article published by Forbes titled "Why Illnois Is in Trouble - 63,000 Public Employees With $100,000+ Salaries Cost Taxpayers $10B." The author of this piece is Adam Andrzejewski, Founder and CEO of OpenTheBooks.com, "a national transparency organization with a database of 4 billion federal, state and local expenditures."

Other Think Tank Works

Next, Donny and John talk about testimony given by a representative of the Pioneer Institute. The document, titled "Pioneer Institute Supports Expanded Access to Oral Care," explains how introducing the idea of Dental Therapists would ease the troubles resulting from a general dental shortage.

Last, Donny and John talk about an article authored by Heartland's own Timothy Benson titled "Environmentalists Know How Many Kids You Have - Too Many." This article takes a look into the dirty secrets of environmentalists - the fact that many of them have aims to limit the growth in population. Donny and John take it one step further, revealing that environmentalists don't want "clean" energy, they want expensive energy.
