John Nothdurft and Donny Kendal present episode #112 of the In The Tank Podcast. This weekly podcast features (as always) interviews, debates, and roundtable discussions that explore the work of think tanks across the country. The show is available for download as part of the Heartland Daily Podcast every Friday. Today’s podcast features work from the Commonwealth Foundation, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, and the Independent Institute.

Policybot Featured Work of the Week

This week's Policybot featured work comes from the Commonwealth Foundation. Their recently released report titled "Restoring the Dignity of Work," serves as an in-depth analysis of the welfare systems in place in Pennsylvania and the rest of the United States. As the author explains, the restrictions on various welfare programs have been eased over the past several years. This has led to a major expansion in government dependency. The author, in the report, explains how reintroducing work requirements would go a long way in moving people off of government dependency and into self-sufficiency.

Other Think Tank Works

Next, John responds to a report by the progressive Center on Budget and Policy Priorities organization titled "Medicaid Expansion Would Benefit Maine in Far-Reaching Ways, Contrary to Governor's Claims."  John counters the claims in this report, explaining how Medicaid expansion would in fact cost states more money.

Donny and John then talk about a policy report from the Independent Institute out of California titled "Customized Learning for California." The author of the report describes how ESAs are the solution to the state's floundering education system. The author, Vicki Alger, proposes a privately financed ESA program to serve as a test case for a future statewide system.

Last, they talk about a recent news story where a robot was granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia.
