Donny Kendal and John Nothdurft are joined by Justin Haskins in episode #170 of the In The Tank Podcast. This weekly podcast features (as always) interviews, debates, and roundtable discussions that explore the work of think tanks across the country. The show is available for download as part of the Heartland Daily Podcast every Friday. Today's episode features work from the Tax Foundation, the Illinois Policy Institute, and the Texas Public Policy Foundation.

Donny, John, and Justin start off the show talking about Christmas! Along with playing a 2018 version of "Baby Its Cold Outside," Donny also brings up a list of "Great Gifts for Libertarians."

Before getting to the main topics for the show, Donny brings up a few updates on Illinois' terrible economic situation. First, the Tax Foundation released a report titled "Wireless Taxes and Fees Climb Again in 2018." Not surprisingly, Illinois has the highest tax rate on cell phone services. Illustrating the economic decline of the state, the Illinois Policy Institute published an article titled "Illinois Sees Record Population Loss Year After Permanent Income Tax Hike." The article details how the state continues to lose residents at an alarming pace.

The first main topic of the show is based on an article published in The Hill titled "Five Things to Know About Ocasio-Cortez's 'Green New Deal.'" Justin describes just how far-reaching and potentially damaging this plan could be. Not only does the plan call for a total rejection of fossil fuels in 10 years, it also demands a litany of socialist programs including a guaranteed job program and universal health care.

Last, the trio talk about an article published by the Texas Public Policy Foundation titled "Debunking the Lies About the First Step Act." Responding to some of the criticisms leveled at the First Step Act - a piece of bipartisan legislation nearing passage - the author explains how beneficial the law will be.
