Donny Kendal and John Nothdurft are joined by Isaac Orr, Policy Fellow at the Center of the American Experiment, in episode #172 of the In The Tank Podcast. This weekly podcast features (as always) interviews, debates, and roundtable discussions that explore the work of think tanks across the country. The show is available for download as part of the Heartland Daily Podcast every Friday. Today's episode features work from the Cato Institute, the Fraser Institute, the Rio Grande Foundation, and the Manhattan Institute.
Before getting to the topics at hand, the trio talk about a gun buyback program... for kids. In an effort to teach kids to "say no to guns," a city in New York is encouraging kids to turn in their Nerf guns, water guns, and other toy guns. Surely this will lead to the end of all violence in the state /sarcasm.
This week's PolicyBot featured work of the week comes from the Cato Institute and the Fraser Institute. The report, titled "The Human Freedom Index 2018," measures the economic and personal freedoms in 162 countries around the world. In addition to going through some of the main results of the report, they also talk about China's growing despotism.
Turning to energy topics, the group talks about an article from the Rio Grande Foundation titled "Weighing in on NM's Newest Nuclear Opportunity." The article is a response to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's consideration of a spent nuclear fuel facility in the state.
Last, they talk about an article from the Manhattan Institute titled "If the Robots Are Coming for Your Jobs, It's to Help You, Not Replace You." Will automation take your jobs and lead to unmanageable job disruption, or will people continue to innovate and find a new use for their labor.
