John Nothdurft and Donny Kendal present episode #97 of the In The Tank Podcast. This weekly podcast features (as always) interviews, debates, and roundtable discussions that explore the work of think tanks across the country. The show is available for download as part of the Heartland Daily Podcast every Friday. Today’s podcast features work from the Mercatus Center, The Heartland Institute, and the Center of the American Experiment.

Policybot Featured Work of the Week

This week's Policybot featured work of the week comes from the Mercatus Center. Mercatus just released the report titled "Ranking the States by Fiscal Condition 2017 Edition." The authors of the report created a ranking based on 5 key metrics: Cash solvency, Budget solvency, Long-run solvency, Service-level solvency, and Trust fund solvency. John and Donny talk about the top 5 and the bottom 5 states of the ranking.

Other Think Tank Works

Next, Donny and John talk about a series of news stories that have recently come out of the think tank world. First, the 34-year-old National Center for Policy Analysis has closed its doors. This development is written about by Michael Hamilton in the most recent Consumer Power Report. Donny and John discuss NCPA and the reports that In The Tank featured in the past.

Then Donny and John talk about the President of the Illinois Policy Institute being tapped to be Chief of Staff for Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner.

Last, Donny and John talk about a comical article produced by the Center of the American Experiment titled "Pollution Agency Advises Against High Carbon." They talk about the proposed carbon-reducing ideas and calculate their carbon footprints.

In the last segment, Donny asks for John's opinion on a proposed bill in Massachusetts that would increase taxes on the now-legal marijuana to 28%.
