Is Medicare for All a Socialist Program? (Guest: Lee Edwards, Ph.D.)

March 11, 2019

Policy Advisor Sarah Lee interviews Dr. Lee Edwards, a leading scholar on socialism at The Heritage Foundation, on Medicare For All and whether it has the markers of a socialist program.

Progressive Democrats have been pushing Medicare For All, the new iteration of single-pay health insurance, with renewed urgency following the failure of Obamacare. Because recent reports indicate Medicare For All would cost upwards of $20 trillion over the next 10 years, many leading Democrat candidates who have already declared their candidacy for president in 2020 have been reluctant to discuss cost. Some, like California Senator Kamala Harris, have even gone so far as to deny that the program is a socialist program. Harris made this claim despite the program's Democratic Socialist champions such as Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Dr. Lee Edwards, an expert on conservative and socialist ideology, examines the Medicare For All program and gives his opinion on whether or not it meets the standard of socialism (hint: it most certainly does).
