Lessons from the Massachusetts Charter Sector (Guest: Dr. Cara Candal)

October 24, 2018

Dr. Cara Candal explains how charter schools can close the achievement gap for low-income students.

Dr. Cara Candal joins the podcast to discuss her new book, “The Fight for the Best Charter Public Schools in the Nation.” Dr. Candal details how the Massachusetts public charter sector is high performing and is closing the achievement gap for low-income students, students in special populations, and English language learners. Dr. Candal discusses the political challenges to charter school expansion, and provides evidence debunking myths from charter school opponents.  One myth includes the idea that charter schools are not serving students with special needs and are draining district resources. Dr. Candal shares what Massachusetts has done right and done wrong, providing lessons for other states in their implementation of charter schools.
