Ranking Local Economic Freedom Across the United States (Guest: Dean Stansel)

April 3, 2019

Dean Stansel joins the show to discuss his “U.S. Metropolitan Area Economic Freedom Index.” Where are the freest areas in the United States?

Dean Stansel joins the podcast to discuss his “U.S. Metropolitan Area Economic Freedom Index,” published by the Reason Foundation. The index rates every metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the United States on measures of economic freedom drawn from official data, and separately ranks the 52 largest and 350 smaller MSAs from freest to least free. Dean discusses finding that there is a lot of variation among cities in different states, and even within states. He found that economically freer areas tend to grow faster and have higher incomes than less free ones.

Dean is Research Associate Professor at Southern Methodist University's O'Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom in the Cox School of Business in Dallas, Texas.
