U.S. Senator Rand Paul joins Heartland Daily Podcast cohosts Jim Lakely and Justin Haskins to discuss what he wants to see in President Trump’s pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. Sen. Paul said his model pick would be another Neil Gorsuch – a surprising answer, considering he’s only been on the high court for two sessions. Sen. Paul also discussed the Supreme Court's recent ruling on unreasonable searches and seizures in the Carpenter v. United States case, which concerned police access to cellphone data.
Lakely and Haskins also talk to Sen. Paul about his support for association health plans – which the U.S. Labor Department earlier this month expanded for small businesses. The new rule will make it easier for small businesses and sole proprietors to band together to purchase health insurance, thereby pooling their resources and greatly increasing their leverage to negotiate better and more-affordable health plans. Dr. Paul (he is an ophthalmologist) said this new Labor Department rule could “lead to a revolution” in the health insurance industry, and may even spell the end of the individual insurance market – which would be a good thing in his eyes.
