Antarctic Sea Ice Expands to New Record

Published September 21, 2012

Climate Change Weekly #63

Antarctic sea ice set another record this past week, registering the most amount of ice ever recorded on day 256 of the calendar year (September 12 of this leap year).

Please, nobody tell the mainstream media, or they might have to retract some stories and admit they are misrepresenting scientific data.

As meteorologist Anthony Watts explains on his Web site this week, new data show ice mass is accumulating on the Antarctic continent as well as in the ocean surrounding Antarctica. The new data contradict an assertion by global warming alarmists that the expanding Antarctic sea ice is coming at the expense of a decline in Antarctic continental ice.

No one in the mainstream media is covering this important story. Amusingly, page after page of Google News results for “Antarctic sea ice record” shows links to news articles breathlessly spreading fear and warning of calamity because Northern Hemisphere Arctic sea ice recently set a 33-year low.

The new data also add context to sensationalist media stories about declining ice in small portions of Antarctica, such as portions of West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula. The mainstream media frequently publish stories focusing on ice loss in these two areas, yet the media stories rarely if ever mention that ice is accumulating over the larger area of East Antarctica and that the continent as a whole is gaining snow and ice mass.

ANTARCTIC SEA ICE ABOVE NORMAL EVERY DAY THIS YEAR

Antarctic sea ice has been above the long-term average for every day during 2012, Steven Goddard reports on his Web site, Real Science. Goddard charted data provided on a daily basis by NASA satellites measuring Antarctic sea ice extent.

CANADIAN SUMMER TEMPERATURES WERE HIGHER IN PAST CENTURIES

Summer temperatures in the British Columbia Coast Mountains were frequently higher in past centuries than has been the case during recent decades, scientists report in the peer-reviewed journal Quaternary Research. The paper shows especially warm temperatures around the years 1240, 1270, 1310, 1340, 1400, 1460, 1500, 1550, 1590, 1660, 1670, 1710, 1820, and 1940.

SCIENCE JOURNAL NATURE DISPUTES WARMING, EXTREME WEATHER LINK

Attributing extreme weather events to global warming is unreliable, the editorial board of the peer-reviewed journal Nature reports in a surprising admission. Despite the usually alarmist tone of Nature articles and editorials, “scientists must be open about shortcomings in the models used” to attribute extreme weather events to global warming, the editors concede.

CURRY SLAMS ALARMIST CLAIMS THAT SKEPTICS ARE CONSPIRACY THEORISTS

Climate science professor Judith Curry, a “lukewarmist” voice in the global warming debate, slams Stephan Lewandowsky and the alarmist peanut gallery for affixing the “conspiracy theorist” label to global warming skeptics. Noting how skeptical bloggers have surgically exposed the flaws in Lewandowsky’s assertions and logic, Curry writes, “Lew, get a clew. I hope this experience with the skeptical bloggers has revealed what they are really all about, as they have revealed YOUR conspiracy by finding a really big pile [of B.S.].”

MANN HIRES PROMINENT TOBACCO LAWYER TO SUE SKEPTICS

Global warming alarmist Michael Mann, who frequently attempts to link global warming skeptics to the tobacco industry, has himself hired a prominent tobacco lawyer to sue critics of his alarmist global warming assertions.
