The U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Cabinet department tasked with implementing national health care legislation and overseeing the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Price had introduced legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act in every session of Congress since the ACA became law in 2010.
The Senate voted 52–47 to confirm on February 9. Then-President-elect Donald Trump nominated Price on November 29, 2016.
‘Best Choice’
Dr. Richard Armstrong, board treasurer at Docs4PatientCare Foundation, says Price is the ideal appointee to lead HHS.
“Dr. Tom Price, as an orthopedic surgeon, recent chairman of the House Budget Committee, and a tireless advocate for patient-centered health care, is the best choice that President Trump could have made for secretary of health and human services,” said Armstrong.
Price’s medical and budgetary expertise further equip the Trump administration to remove government barriers to market-based health care reforms, Armstrong says.
“Dr. Price will bring a wealth of knowledge to this important position and bring us closer to the reforms American health care has needed for several decades,” Armstrong said.
