Published May 23, 2017

The Heartland Institute announced today that Edward Hudgins, Ph.D., has joined its team of public policy experts as research director.

Hudgins will oversee the origination and editing of books, policy studies, and other research publications as well as produce his own original research and commentary on a variety of topics. He joins the nonprofit organization at a time when its publications are getting unprecedented attention by elected officials, civic and business leaders, educators, and media.

Hudgins is the author of thousands of published articles and essays and author or editor of several books including The Republican Party’s Civil War: Will Freedom Win?(2014), Space: The Free-Market Frontier (2002), and Mail @ the Millennium: Will the Postal Service Go Private?(2000).

From 2002 until earlier this year, Hudgins held several positions with The Atlas Society, most recently serving as director of advocacy and senior scholar. From 1994 until 2002, Hudgins was director of regulatory studies for the Cato Institute and editor of Regulation magazine. From 1993 to 1994 he was a senior economist for the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress, and for eight years prior to that, he was a policy analyst for The Heritage Foundation, ending his tenure there as deputy director for economic policy studies.

Hudgins received a BA degree from the University of Maryland, MA from American University, and Ph.D. in political philosophy from Catholic University of America.

“We’re thrilled to bring on board Ed Hudgins, a researcher and writer known throughout the freedom movement as an original thinker, a talented editor, and someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of public policy,” said Heartland President Joseph Bast. “The sheer volume of books and reports in our publication pipeline requires us to build out our research department, and we now have in place exactly the right person to oversee that growth and ensure the high quality of our publications.”
