PRESS RELEASE: Heartland Institute Experts Applaud Confirmation of David Bernhardt as U.S. Secretary of the Interior

April 12, 2019

The United States Senate on Thursday confirmed David Bernhardt as Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior by a vote of 56-41. All Republicans voted for Bernhardt, as did three Democrats and one independent.

Earlier this month, The Heartland Institute led the collection of signatures for a coalition letter urging the United States Senate to confirm David Bernhardt as the new secretary of the Department of the Interior (DOI).

“David Bernhardt is the leader America needs at the Department of the Interior. He will bring responsible management to our public lands along with efficient and much needed energy development. This is a huge win for energy freedom and America.”

“David Bernhardt has vital experience in natural resource issues and is well-qualified to lead the Department of the Interior. It’s a shame Democrats in the Senate held up his nomination for as long as they did, but it is good he’s finally been confirmed.

During his job as acting secretary, Bernhardt has been doing a stellar job balancing the protection of our vital lands and natural resources and the need for continued productive use of federal lands for recreation, energy extraction, and agriculture. I’m sure the department’s good work will continue under his tenure.”
