The United Kingdom’s Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting law makes it a criminal offence to fail to report or to misreport energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, punishable by an unlimited fine.

The study leads to the conclusion that Government should repeal the SECR requirements immediately, and return to the Treasury’s original plans to reduce both the scope of pressure on businesses and the costs of compliance. This would require placing energy and greenhouse gas reporting – if any is really necessary – in its own, ideally voluntary, regulatory framework.
