Coalition Letter Opposing Draft Legislation of Section 101 of Patent Act

July 3, 2019

Over 150 individuals and organizations signed this letter opposing a proposal to amend Section 101 of the Patent Act.

Sen. Chris Coons ( R- NC)  and Sen. Thom Tillis (D - DE), and Representatives Collins, Johnson and Stivers introduced a proposal that would amend Section 101 of the Patent Act and reverse 150 years of court-precedent, expanding patent protection eligibility to include  laws of nature, such as human genes and abstract ideas. According to the ACLU, one of the signatories, "if enacted, this legislation would pave the way for businesses to own exclusive rights to genes, giving them the right to prohibit all others from providing and developing genetic testing and pursuing research."
