Civic leaders in Raleigh and Wake County were recently presented with a study purporting to show the economic benefits that a National Hockey League team would bring to the local economy. The study, by UNC-Charlotte economist John Connaughton, estimated that the NHL team would inject $111 Million annually into the Raleigh-Durham region. This conclusion was used to argue that the acquisition of a professional hockey team is an economic developement tool. It was also used to generate support for taxpayer financing of a 21,000 seat arena.
