As countries are increasingly pushing green energy, including for transportation, they are running up against the reality that these technologies demand critical minerals, the supply and refining of which China dominates.

For instance, the supply of rare earth elements needed for the manufacturing of permanent magnets for wind turbine generators and electric vehicle motors, as well as uses in other technologies is dominated by China, who has used its near monopoly to extort geopolitical and economic concessions from Western countries with which they are competing.

New sources for raw and refined materials are needed to ensure the security and advance of green technologies, which will require mining.
